Dr. Victoria Savage – A Leading Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine

BVSc MSc CertAVP DIpECEIM MRCVS

Dr. Victoria (“Vicky”) Savage has established herself as one of the leading voices in equine internal medicine, known for her expertise in critical care, neonatology, and complex medical research.

As a European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine at Three Counties Equine Hospital in Gloucestershire, UK, Dr. Victoria Savage combines cutting-edge clinical knowledge with a deep commitment to advancing horse health and veterinary education.

Academic Foundations and Global Experience

A 2013 graduate of the University of Liverpool, Dr. Victoria Savage began her career in mixed practice in Yorkshire, gaining valuable experience across a broad range of species. Her passion for equine medicine quickly drew her to more specialized training, leading to an internship in equine medicine and critical care at Scone Equine Hospital in Australia.

It was there that her fascination with neonatal foal care and stud medicine took root. For the next two years, she worked as a stud veterinarian across both hemispheres, following the breeding seasons between the UK and Australasia. This international exposure not only sharpened her clinical skills but also gave her a unique perspective on the demands of equine reproduction and early-life care.

Specialist Training and Research

In 2017, Dr. Victoria Savage began a residency in Equine Internal Medicine at the University of Bristol, one of the UK’s most prestigious veterinary programs, completing her residency in July 2020 to become a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM), and continues to expand her expertise through the equine internal medicine CPD offered by the Practitioner’s Program for veterinarians seeking advanced training in critical care and complex medical cases.

Alongside her clinical work, she conducted significant research on two challenging conditions:

Equine acute kidney disease, an area of growing importance in equine critical care.

Trigeminal-mediated headshaking, a complex and often debilitating condition affecting performance horses.

Her academic achievements include an RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice and a Master’s degree in Veterinary Parasitology, further reinforcing her reputation as a clinician-scientist with both breadth and depth of expertise.

Current Role at Three Counties Equine Hospital

Since joining Three Counties Equine Hospital in October 2020, Dr. Victoria Savage has become an integral part of the hospital’s specialist team. Her work spans intensive care, internal medicine consultations, and advanced case management, particularly for foals and critically ill horses. Her calm, methodical approach to complex cases makes her highly regarded by colleagues and clients alike.

Life Beyond the Clinic

Dr. Victoria Savage’s dedication to excellence is not limited to veterinary medicine. An accomplished endurance athlete, she thrives on physical challenges that mirror the resilience required in her profession. In 2023, she completed the legendary Bob Graham Round: a gruelling 66-mile fell running challenge across 42 peaks of the Lake District with over 8,200 meters of ascent, finishing in under 24 hours.

Fuelled by determination (and a few cheese and pickle sandwiches), she credited her veterinary background of sleepless nights and emergency calls as part of her endurance training.

Away from the hospital and the mountains, she enjoys running, kitesurfing, snowboarding, and riding. At home, her loyal collie provides enthusiastic companionship on the trails, while her less impressed Westie prefers a slower pace.

Dr. Victoria Savage: A Recognized Leader in Equine Medicine

Whether treating a critically ill foal, investigating emerging equine diseases, or tackling some of the UK’s toughest endurance runs, Dr. Victoria Savage exemplifies precision, perseverance, and passion.

Her unique combination of clinical expertise, research achievements, and personal drive makes her a sought-after veterinary specialist and a compelling speaker within the international equine community.
