Rachel Bellini – A Pioneer of Integrative Equine Sports Medicine

DVM CVA CVSMT

For more than three decades, Rachel Bellini has dedicated her life to helping horses achieve peak performance, overcome injury, and thrive through a unique integration of conventional sports medicine and advanced holistic therapies.

A board-certified veterinary professional with extensive training in acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, and postural rehabilitation, Bellini has become a trusted leader in the evolving field of equine sports medicine.

Her work stands at the intersection of science and intuition, blending rigorous diagnostic skills with innovative, whole-horse approaches that restore balance and prevent injury.

From the Racetrack to Holistic Medicine

Raised in the western suburbs of Boston, Rachel Bellini’s love for animals began early, nurtured by a passion for horses that would shape the course of her life. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology from McGill University in 1985, she pursued veterinary training at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1991.

Her early career placed her at the heart of Thoroughbred racing, working at racetracks across the United States with some of the nation’s top trainers and equine surgeons. These experiences provided an invaluable foundation in sports medicine and performance care, but also sparked an awareness of the limitations of conventional treatment.

She soon recognized the need for more integrated approaches that addressed not just symptoms, but the underlying causes of lameness and performance decline.

A pivotal career shift came in the early 2000s, when Rachel Bellini transitioned into equine referral practice in the horse-dense suburbs of Chicago. There, she honed her expertise in advanced imaging, lameness diagnostics, and cutting-edge therapeutic techniques.

It was also during this time that she began exploring complementary modalities, opening the door to a more holistic and transformative way of practicing medicine.

Expanding the Toolbox: Advanced Certifications and Training

Rachel Bellini has invested decades in expanding her skillset beyond traditional veterinary medicine. She completed her certification in Veterinary Acupuncture at the Chi Institute in 2005 and became a certified Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapist through the Healing Oasis Wellness Center in 2008.

That same year, she achieved certification from the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA).

Her pursuit of knowledge did not stop there. She has studied homeopathy at the New England School of Homeopathy, trained in postural rehabilitation with Dr. Judith Shoemaker and Dr. Karen Gellman, and completed modules in equine sports medicine through ISELP, all of which are incorporated into the equine veterinary masterclass library offered through the Practitioner’s Program

Additional training in canine rehabilitation, applied kinesiology, and functional neurology further enriched her approach, giving her a unique ability to see the horse as a dynamic system rather than a collection of isolated issues.

This diverse foundation allows Bellini to integrate multiple modalities into customised treatment plans, offering equestrians solutions that go beyond pain management to foster long-term resilience and performance.

Heart Equine: A Vision for Whole-Horse Wellness

In 2008, Rachel Bellini founded Heart Equine, a practice dedicated to holistic sports medicine for horses and their riders. Through her work, she focuses on identifying early signs of compensation before they escalate into injuries, and on empowering trainers, owners, and veterinarians with accessible strategies to support equine health.

Her guiding principle is simple yet powerful: results matter. For Rachel, healing is not about masking problems, it is about restoring harmony, preventing breakdown, and helping horses and riders achieve joyful, sustainable partnerships.

Clients value her ability to bridge the gap between traditional diagnostics and holistic care, offering therapies that are both innovative and deeply grounded in experience. Whether treating elite sport horses or treasured companions, she approaches each case with curiosity, humility, and a relentless commitment to uncovering the root causes of dysfunction.

A Legacy of Learning and Leadership

Beyond her clinical work, Rachel Bellini is an active educator and mentor, sharing her knowledge with colleagues and inspiring equestrians to embrace integrative approaches to care. Her career reflects not only technical excellence but also a willingness to evolve, adapt, and continually push the boundaries of what is possible in equine medicine.

As she often emphasizes, horses themselves have been her greatest teachers, guiding her through the complexities of true healing, challenging assumptions, and continually reminding her that the answers lie in listening deeply to the animal.

Why Rachel Bellini Matters

In an era where veterinary medicine faces growing pressures around cost, sustainability, and wellness, Rachel Bellini offers a refreshing vision: one that honors tradition while embracing innovation, and one that prioritizes prevention, balance, and connection as much as performance.
