Three Lessons Every Veterinarian Should Know About Equine Dentistry

When asked about the key elements all veterinarians should know, Professor Gary Wilson highlighted three essential pillars of equine dentistry:

Conduct a Thorough Oral Examination
“Be patient and do a proper oral examination,” he emphasized. Prof. Wilson believes that understanding a horse’s oral health begins with a detailed and careful assessment. This foundational step is often overlooked but is critical to identifying underlying issues and ensuring accurate diagnoses.

Master Sedation Techniques
Professor Gary Wilson noted that sedation is often the key to successful equine dentistry. “Learn how to sedate horses properly,” he advised. Veterinarians who struggle with equine dentistry often cite difficulties with patient compliance – a problem that can often be solved with adequate sedation.

Equip Yourself Properly
According to Prof. Wilson, the right tools can make all the difference. “Most people who say they don’t enjoy equine dentistry often lack the appropriate equipment,” he said. A well-prepared veterinarian, armed with modern tools and techniques, can transform the patient and practitioner experience.

A Memorable (and Unforgettable) Encounter

Reflecting on his career, Professor Gary Wilson shared a story that continues to stand out. “We darted a polar bear and went in to examine it as if it were asleep, and it sat up,” he recalled with a chuckle.

While such moments are rare, they serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of working with animals.

This memorable encounter also underscores Prof. Wilson’s dedication to ensuring safety and precision, even in high-pressure situations.

Outside of veterinary dentistry, Prof. Wilson’s interests are as dynamic as his professional achievements. When asked about his ideal holiday, he joked, “Aren’t adventure holidays and tropical paradises the same thing?” It’s a reflection of his adventurous spirit and zest for life.
