Three Things Every Veterinarian Should Know About Equine Dentistry
When asked about the most important lessons he wished every equine veterinarian understood about dentistry, Dr. Oliver Liyou shared three powerful insights:
It’s More Than Floating Teeth
Dr. Liyou emphasized the importance of seeing equine dentistry as a comprehensive practice rather than just a mechanical procedure. “It’s more than just floating sharp points,” he explained.
Dentistry has the potential to profoundly impact the health, comfort, and performance of horses, requiring a nuanced understanding and attention to detail.
Horses Are Masters at Hiding Pain
One of the most fascinating (and concerning) aspects of equine dentistry is horses’ ability to mask severe pathology. Dr. Oliver Liyou shared cases of horses with fractured maxillas and severe tooth root abscesses that continued eating despite their pain.
“They might just eat a little slower, but they get on with it,” he noted. Recognizing subtle signs of dental issues is critical for improving outcomes.
Equine Dentistry is a Whole New World
Dr. Oliver Liyou likened equine dentistry to scuba diving – an ever-deepening field of exploration. “You can go to whatever depth you want, and you’ll come out feeling pretty chuffed,” he said.
The complexity and variety of cases offer endless opportunities for growth and discovery, making it an exciting and fulfilling specialty.
Meat Pies, Sausage Rolls, and Career Experience
A proud Aussie through and through, Dr. Oliver Liyou joked that he’d have a meat pie in one hand and a couple of sausage rolls in the other. But when the conversation turned to career advice, he struck a more reflective tone.
“If I could go back 20 years, I’d invest in self-improvement and business skills earlier,” he admitted. He urged young veterinarians to prioritize learning about leadership, money management, and communication.
“It’ll save you a lot of grief and angst,” he emphasized, adding that financial literacy can reduce reliance on clinical work as the sole source of income.
Tropical Island or Adventure Holiday? Both.
When asked about his ideal vacation, Dr. Oliver Liyou leaned toward a tropical escape. “Definitely a tropical island for me – at least until I’ve rested enough,” he said with a laugh. Once recharged, he imagined finding adventure on the same island, reflecting his dynamic and curious personality.
A Zen Place with Horses and Dogs
Dr. Liyou’s favorite moments often involve riding or driving his horses, accompanied by his loyal dogs on trails through the forest or along the beach. “It’s one of my real Zen places,” he shared. These simple yet profound experiences highlight his deep connection to nature, animals, and the Australian countryside.
Why Dr. Oliver Liyou Loves Equine Dentistry
For Dr. Liyou, equine dentistry is a rare intersection of positivity and purpose. “It ticks all the boxes – it’s good for the horse, good for the owner, good for the vet, and good for the greater good,” he explained.
Unlike emergency treatments like colic, equine dentistry offers the satisfaction of proactive care that prevents suffering and enhances well-being.
He reflected on his early start, floating teeth at just 12 years old with his family’s Standardbreds, and how the field has captivated him ever since. “I love the positivity, the variety, and the challenges,” he said.
With so much room for advancement and innovation, equine dentistry remains an exciting frontier for Dr. Liyou.
