AUVE - Asociación Uruguaya de Veterinaria Equina: History, Mission & Events

The Asociación Uruguaya de Veterinaria Equina (AUVE) is the professional body for equine veterinarians in Uruguay. Established to support clinicians, promote equine health, and advance continuing education, AUVE plays an important role in the development of Uruguay’s veterinary profession.

A Brief History of AUVE

AUVE was founded as a specialist affiliate of the Sociedad de Medicina Veterinaria del Uruguay (SMVU). From its beginnings, the association has provided a platform for veterinarians interested in horses to share knowledge, support each other in practice, and represent the equine sector within Uruguay’s veterinary community.

The association has been headquartered at the Casa del Veterinario in Montevideo, where it continues to maintain its institutional base.

What Asociación Uruguaya de Veterinaria Equina Does Today

Asociación Uruguaya de Veterinaria Equina’s mission is to strengthen equine medicine in Uruguay by:

Promoting professional excellence among veterinarians
Organising scientific and technical conferences
Sharing updates on equine health and welfare issues
Representing equine veterinarians within SMVU and national veterinary structures
Building links with regional and international equine vet networks

AUVE Events & Technical Conferences

One of AUVE’s key contributions is its annual Jornadas Técnicas Equinas (Equine Technical Conferences).

The Recent Technical Day: was held in June 2025 at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Montevideo, with over 115 participants. The program included clinical case presentations, surgery updates, and equine welfare discussions. No updates on the next Jornadas Técnicas Equinas have yet to be provided for 2026.
These events provide continuing education (CPD) for clinicians, students, and researchers, helping equine vets stay updated on current science and practical techniques.

AUVE also circulates news and events through its official channels and provides a searchable directory of members by department across Uruguay.

Membership & Structure

AUVE’s membership consists of equine veterinarians from across Uruguay. Members are organised by department, reflecting the widespread presence of equine practice throughout the country.

As a filial body of the SMVU, AUVE also participates in national veterinary discussions, ensuring that equine practitioners have a voice in broader veterinary and agricultural policy.

International Links

AUVE is part of the wider Iberoamerican Federation of Equine Veterinary Associations (FIAVE), which connects Spanish and Portuguese-speaking equine vets across Latin America and Europe. Through FIAVE, AUVE members gain access to international congresses, webinars, and collaboration with colleagues from Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Spain and the APMVE in Portugal.

Like other FIAVE associations, AUVE also has indirect links to WEVA (World Equine Veterinary Association), ensuring Uruguay’s equine vets remain part of the global network.
