Mexican Association of Equine Veterinary Specialists

AMMVEE: Mexican Association of Equine Veterinary Specialists (Mexico)

AMMVEE stands for the Asociación Mexicana de Médicos Veterinarios Especialistas en Equinos, Mexico’s national professional association for equine veterinarians. Founded in 1972, AMMVEE supports horse practitioners through continuing education, certification, scientific congresses, and professional representation.

What Is AMMVEE?

AMMVEE is a specialist veterinary association that represents equine veterinarians across Mexico. It focuses on improving clinical standards, equine welfare, postgraduate education, and collaboration with international equine veterinary organisations.

A Brief History of AMMVEE

AMMVEE was born out of necessity. Following the Venezuelan equine encephalitis outbreak in Mexico (1969–1972), veterinarians realised they needed a stronger, unified body to coordinate responses and raise standards.

On 11 March 1972, AMMVEE was officially established, making it one of Latin America’s first specialist equine veterinary associations.

From its earliest days, AMMVEE combined science, practice, and collaboration, positioning itself as the voice of Mexican equine veterinarians. Today, it remains a hub for professional development and a recognised partner in the wider equine industry.

What AMMVEE Does Today

AMMVEE represents veterinarians working across racing stables, breeding farms, sport horse practice, and large populations of working equids.

This breadth ensures its education and guidelines are relevant to both high-performance equine medicine and everyday field practice in Mexico.

  • Continuing education (CPD): Courses, workshops, and a postgraduate diploma in equine medicine and surgery.
  • Annual congress: AMMVEE organises one of the most important equine veterinary congresses in Latin America, bringing together Mexican and international experts.
  • Certification: Members can pursue official recognition as equine practitioners, strengthening professional credibility.
  • Guidelines & resources: Publishing protocols on topics such as euthanasia, pre-purchase examinations, and equine welfare.
  • Networking & support: Regional delegations allow vets from across Mexico to connect locally while benefiting from national representation.

AMMVEE Annual Congress (Mexican Equine Veterinary Congress)

The AMMVEE Annual Congress is Mexico’s flagship equine veterinary conference and one of the longest-running specialist equine meetings in Latin America.
