Early Career and Education
Dr. Richard McMullen’s path to veterinary medicine began in an unconventional way. Originally from California, he joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18, which led to his first international experience when he was stationed in Germany.
During his military service, he began pursuing higher education, ultimately earning his veterinary degree from Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich, Germany, graduating in 2002.
Driven by an early fascination with ophthalmology, Dr. Richard McMullen went on to complete his doctoral thesis at LMU in 2005, focusing on the role of equine adenoviruses in cases of suspected viral keratitis.
That same year, he achieved advanced certification in equine ophthalmology in Germany, a rare distinction known as the Certificate of Additional Qualification in Equine Ophthalmology (Zusatzeichnung Augenheilkunde – Pferde).
Advanced Training and Specialization
In 2006, Dr. Richard McMullen crossed the Atlantic to join North Carolina State University (NCSU), where he completed a competitive three-year residency in comparative ophthalmology. His residency marked a turning point in his career, providing extensive training in both small and large animal eye care, as well as exposure to cutting-edge diagnostic imaging and surgical techniques.
Following his residency, Dr. Richard McMullen remained at NCSU as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, where he built a reputation as both a skilled clinician and an inspiring educator.
In 2012, he achieved dual Diplomate status, earning board certification from both the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) and the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO), a rare accomplishment reflecting his international expertise.
Leadership Roles in Germany and the U.S.
From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Richard McMullen returned to Germany to lead the Equine Ophthalmology Service at the Equine Clinic Munich-Riem, one of the few practices dedicated exclusively to equine eye care. There, he advanced the development of standing ophthalmic surgeries and refined approaches to complex corneal and intraocular procedures.
In 2017, Dr. Richard McMullen joined Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama, where he established a stand-alone Equine Ophthalmology Service.
His leadership and dedication to teaching were quickly recognized, and he was promoted to full professor with tenure. During his time at Auburn, he combined clinical service with groundbreaking research, publishing numerous peer-reviewed studies and mentoring future specialists.
Current Work at the University of Zurich
In 2024, Dr. Richard McMullen returned to Europe to join the University of Zurich, where he continues to focus on advancing equine ophthalmology. His research interests include novel treatments such as intravitreal injections and photodynamic therapy for diseases like equine recurrent uveitis and immune-mediated keratitis.
He is also exploring advanced imaging techniques, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and digital infrared photography, to improve diagnosis and monitoring of eye diseases in horses.
