Caryn Plummer

DVM, DACVO

Caryn Plummer is a nationally renowned veterinary ophthalmologist whose career has been defined by a deep commitment to preserving vision and advancing the understanding of ocular disease in both companion and equine patients.

A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (DACVO) since 2006, Caryn Plummer has spent nearly two decades combining clinical excellence with academic leadership, research, and global education.

Currently a tenured professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Caryn Plummer leads the Comparative Ophthalmology Service and teaches across a range of courses from small animal ophthalmology to equine-specific surgery and advanced pharmacology.

Her career reflects an unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of veterinary eye care through innovation, mentorship, and scientific inquiry.

Academic Excellence and Specialized Training

A native of Florida, Caryn Plummer began her academic journey at Yale University, where she earned her degree in Biology in 1997. She went on to graduate with honors from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002.

She completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Michigan State University, followed by a prestigious residency in comparative ophthalmology at the University of Florida.

Her decision to remain at UF after residency speaks volumes about her dedication to advancing the field of ophthalmology from within an academic setting. In 2006, she became board-certified by the ACVO and immediately joined the UF faculty, where she has played an integral role in shaping the next generation of veterinary specialists.

Research That Drives Progress

Caryn Plummer’s research portfolio is centered on corneal wound healing, immune-mediated ocular disease, glaucoma, and novel surgical techniques – particularly those applicable to equine patients, positioning her as a leading contributor to advancements in equine ophthalmology CE program that equips veterinarians with the latest evidence-based knowledge in eye care.

Her studies in pharmacology and ocular drug delivery have helped refine how medications penetrate the eye, ultimately improving clinical outcomes for a wide range of species.

The University of Florida graduate fascination with the cornea stems from what she calls its “elegant architecture.” But her research also takes a pragmatic, problem-solving approach, tackling complex issues like primary open-angle glaucoma in dogs, fungal keratitis in horses, and uveitis in high-risk breeds such as the Appaloosa.

As Chair of the Vision for Animals Foundation Glaucoma Consortium, Caryn Plummer works closely with an interdisciplinary team to develop targeted strategies for diagnosing and managing glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness in animals.

Educator, Mentor, and Advocate

Caryn Plummer has an impressive teaching track record, having designed and delivered over a dozen core courses in veterinary medicine, from ophthalmology clerkships to avian medicine and large animal clinical pharmacology.

Her passion for teaching is matched by her advocacy for students, particularly those pursuing careers in equine medicine or facing the demands of specialty training.

She currently serves as secretary/treasurer for the International Equine Ophthalmology Consortium (IEOC) and sits on its Board of Directors.

Through this role, she not only collaborates with global experts but also mentors early-career veterinarians with an interest in equine eye care. Her lectures are known for their depth, clarity, and ability to bridge clinical application with emerging science.

National and International Recognition

Caryn Plummer’s contributions to veterinary ophthalmology have been recognized through numerous honors, including:

  • Clinical Investigator of the Year, Florida Veterinary Medical Association (2019)
  • UF Term Professorship (2017)
  • Superior Accomplishment Award, University of Florida (2015)
  • Veterinarian’s Honor Roll, Winn Feline Foundation (2017)
  • Multiple scholarships and accolades from the University of Florida and national veterinary organizations

She is also a contributing author and associate editor for Veterinary Ophthalmology, the gold-standard reference text in the field. Her chapters in the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions are widely used in academic programs and clinics around the world.

A Life Rooted in Horses, Curiosity, and Community

Caryn Plummer’s love of horses began in childhood, nurtured through 4-H and riding lessons that helped her overcome shyness and develop a sense of purpose.

Her first horse, a blue-eyed Paint gelding named Miami Vice, left a lasting impression – not just emotionally, but professionally, after being diagnosed with an ocular tumor.

Though she no longer owns a horse, she regularly provides care to retired equines at Mill Creek Farm, a sanctuary for aging horses in Florida.

She also volunteers for the ACVO/Epicur Pharma National Service Animal Eye Exam Event, offering free eye screenings to working animals who serve in law enforcement, therapy, and assistance roles.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Caryn Plummer’s interests are as diverse as her clinical expertise: beekeeping, scuba diving, gardening, hiking, and naming her pet chickens with humorous flair. A tap dancer in her youth, she brings the same sense of rhythm and joy to her professional life.
