BVSc BSc PhD CertAVP MVetMed DipECVDI FHEA MRCVS

In the highly specialised world of equine diagnostic imaging where precision, scientific depth, and clinical insight intersect, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan stands out as one of the profession’s most influential voices.
With a career spanning clinical practice, advanced research, and specialist-level training, she has built a reputation for elevating the standard of imaging in equine medicine while shaping the next generation of veterinary professionals.
Today, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan serves as UK Head of Equine Diagnostic Imaging for IVC Evidensia, a role that places her at the forefront of imaging innovation, clinical support, and strategic development across one of Europe’s largest veterinary networks.
Her journey to this leadership position reflects a rare blend of academic excellence, practical experience, and sustained contributions to veterinary science.
A Strong Foundation in Veterinary Medicine and Research
Dr. Rhiannon Morgan’s academic path began at the University of Liverpool, where she earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) in 2009. Alongside her clinical training, she completed an intercalated degree in Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Bristol, an experience that sparked her enduring interest in research and the biological foundations of musculoskeletal disease.
Following graduation, she secured a coveted internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, one of the most respected centres for equine diagnostic imaging and orthopaedics. During this formative period, she gained hands-on experience assessing poor performance in sport horses and interpreting complex imaging cases, skills that would later become central to her specialist career.
Her early clinical work continued in Cambridgeshire, where she practised as an equine ambulatory veterinarian. This chapter grounded her in the realities of field practice and deepened her understanding of the challenges faced by horses and the teams who care for them.
Advancing Science Through a PhD in Cellular Biology
Driven by a desire to bridge clinical problems with scientific discovery, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan pursued a PhD at the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, returning to Liverpool to focus on the molecular mechanisms behind inflammatory cytokines and osteoarthritis.
Her doctoral research offered meaningful insights into joint pathology, insights that now inform both her clinical work and her approach to advanced imaging.
Expert Training and Specialist Accreditation
Dr. Rhiannon Morgan’s move to the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) marked a turning point in her career. She completed a rigorous large animal diagnostic imaging residency, gaining deep expertise in modalities including radiography, ultrasonography, CT, and MRI.
Her achievements during this intensive training culminated in her recognition as a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (DipECVDI), a credential that signifies the highest level of specialist competence in her field.
She went on to join the RVC faculty as a Lecturer in Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging, contributing to clinical service, teaching, and research within the Equine Referral Hospital.

Leadership in Education, Training, and Professional Development
Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan has played a significant role in specialist training. She served as Chair of RIVDI (Rounds in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging), a Europe-wide initiative supporting ECVDI residents through structured film-reading sessions, mock examinations, and wellbeing programmes.
Her commitment to mentoring reflects her belief that excellence in imaging depends on strong, well-supported clinicians. She also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education, underscoring her dedication to high-quality teaching and communication.
A Decade of Impact Through the Equine Veterinary Journal Podcast
For more than 10 years, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan has produced the Equine Veterinary Journal’s “In Conversation” podcast, interviewing leading researchers and translating complex findings into accessible insights for equine clinicians worldwide. Her work has made cutting-edge research more reachable, strengthening the link between scientific discovery and everyday practice.
Research Focus: The Equine Head and Joint Disease
Dr. Rhiannon Morgan’s research interests centre on advanced imaging of the head and the detection of joint pathology. Her involvement in one of the largest equine head CT studies to date highlights her contribution to evolving diagnostic capabilities and improving understanding of challenging anatomical regions.
Leading Equine Imaging Across the UK
In her current role at IVC Evidensia, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan oversees equine and large-animal diagnostic imaging services nationwide. She provides advanced imaging reports, second-opinion consultations, and clinical support to veterinarians across the organisation, helping practices deliver high-level, evidence-based care.
Dr. Rhiannon Morgan: A Life Beyond the Clinic
Outside of her professional work, Dr. Rhiannon Morgan enjoys running often accompanied by her three dogs, and participates in eventing when time allows. These pursuits mirror the energy, discipline, and passion she brings to her veterinary career.
Dr. Rhiannon Morgan’s contributions to equine diagnostic imaging continue to shape clinical practice, elevate research, and empower veterinary professionals across the UK and beyond. Her work stands as a testament to what can be achieved when scientific curiosity, clinical skill, and a commitment to education come together in one career.
