Three Things Every Veterinarian Should Know About Marketing

When asked about the key principles of marketing for veterinarians, Dr. Peter Weinstein offered three foundational truths:

Marketing is Not Selling
Dr. Weinstein emphasized that marketing should not be confused with sales tactics. “Marketing is about creating awareness and building relationships, not just pushing a product or service,” he explained. By focusing on connecting with clients, practices can cultivate trust and loyalty.

Marketing is Built on Trust
At the core of successful equine marketing is trust. “If your clients trust you, they’ll keep coming back, refer their friends, and become advocates for your practice,” Dr. Weinstein said. Building trust through consistent communication and excellent care is key to long-term success.

Retention Marketing is Your Superpower
Dr. Weinstein highlighted the importance of retaining existing clients. “Retention marketing allows you to create a family of clients who stay with your practice from womb to tomb,” he shared. Loyal clients not only provide stability but also drive word-of-mouth referrals, making them invaluable to a thriving practice.

An Unexpected Family Legacy

When asked to reveal something few people know about him, Dr. Peter Weinstein shared a surprising piece of family history: his uncle won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. “I don’t tell a lot of people this, but it’s true,” he admitted with a chuckle. Though he joked about not inheriting the same scientific genius, his own achievements in veterinary medicine and business speak volumes about his dedication and talent.

What’s on His Bookshelf?

An avid reader, Dr. Weinstein is currently immersed in Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. “It’s a really cool history of the development of the human race,” he shared, highlighting his curiosity and passion for understanding the bigger picture – qualities that inform his work in reshaping the veterinary profession.

A Shar-Pei with Diamond Studs

Dr. Peter Weinstein’s favorite veterinary memory involves a Shar-Pei, a California beach town, and an unusual request.

The dog’s owner, who happened to be the local chief of police, brought the Shar-Pei in for a routine neuter but had an unexpected addition to the procedure: piercing the dog’s ears with diamond studs. “It was definitely a first for me,” Dr. Weinstein laughed, recalling the quirky moment.

His willingness to accommodate the unconventional request (safely, of course) illustrates his adaptability and sense of humor.
