Crystal Eng – A Board-Certified Leader in Veterinary Eye Care

DVM, DACVO

Crystal Eng, DVM, DACVO, is a highly accomplished, board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist whose career reflects a unique blend of scientific expertise, global experience, and a deep passion for animal health. A native Texan, Crystal Eng has dedicated her life to preserving and restoring vision in animals, from beloved pets to working horses and even exotic wildlife.

Her work spans multiple states and countries, making her a sought-after expert in equine and small animal ophthalmology.

A Foundation in Animal Science and Conservation

Crystal Eng’s journey into veterinary medicine began with a profound interest in animal reproduction and conservation. She earned her undergraduate degrees at Texas A&M University, focusing on animal reproduction and cloning, initially aspiring to work with endangered and exotic species.

Driven by a desire to make a global impact, she took a unique path before veterinary school, accepting a position at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There, she worked on specialized breeding programs aimed at preserving rare and endangered animals.

Building on this experience, Crystal Eng pursued graduate studies at Missouri State University, concentrating on reproductive endocrinology. Her research involved elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, cattle, and horses.

During this time, she gained hands-on expertise in advanced reproductive techniques, including semen collection and artificial insemination, and contributed to cutting-edge studies on semen cryopreservation for endangered species. This early work reflects her lifelong commitment to supporting animals in every stage of life and health.

Veterinary Training and Diverse Clinical Experience

After earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Texas A&M, Crystal Eng entered clinical practice with a broad foundation in mixed animal medicine. Her early career included a rigorous internship at Alvarado Veterinary Clinic, where she cared for small animals, equines, food animals, and exotics.

This experience allowed her to develop skills in emergency care, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, lameness evaluations, and general wellness.

She went on to serve as an emergency veterinarian at several high-volume specialty hospitals in Texas, including the Emergency Hospital of Collin County and the Center for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care. Working alongside criticalists, neurologists, and internists, she developed the fast-paced decision-making skills required to handle complex and life-threatening cases.

Specialization in Ophthalmology

While Crystal Eng excelled in emergency and general practice, her true calling emerged when she discovered the field of veterinary ophthalmology. In 2020, she completed a private practice residency in Dallas, Texas, where she honed advanced skills in eye surgery, diagnostics, and treatment for both small animals and horses.

Today, Crystal Eng focuses on equine ophthalmology and complex eye procedures, with a particular interest in cataract surgery, corneal disease, and laser therapies – expertise that aligns perfectly with our commitment to supporting veterinarians through advanced equine eye care.

She splits her time between a multi-specialty hospital in Bozeman, Montana, and her ambulatory equine ophthalmology practice in Texas, allowing her to serve a wide range of patients, from beloved family pets to performance horses and working animals. Her mission is clear: to do everything possible to help animals keep, restore, or regain their vision.

Global Perspective and Professional Impact

Crystal Eng’s diverse background gives her a truly global perspective on animal health. She provides relief ophthalmology services across the United States and consults internationally, sharing her expertise with veterinary teams and clients around the world.

Her work bridges multiple disciplines, combining her early conservation experience with state-of-the-art clinical care to improve the quality of life for animals everywhere.

Her role as a consulting ophthalmologist at Weatherford Equine Medical Center and her affiliation with Bridger Veterinary Specialists in Montana reflect her commitment to making advanced eye care accessible to rural and equine-focused communities.

Life Beyond Veterinary Medicine

Outside of her professional life, Crystal Eng is an avid adventurer. She enjoys traveling the world, wake surfing, trail riding, skiing, and performing on the flying trapeze, a hobby that speaks to her bold and dynamic personality.

The Texas A&M graduate currently resides in Dallas with her beloved Poodle and Greyhound and looks forward to exploring Montana’s outdoor beauty whenever she visits the region.
