Stephanie Bell

DVM, DACVO

In the world of equine medicine, few specialists blend clinical excellence, research innovation, and personal passion quite like Stephanie Bell. A board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, Stephanie Bell has dedicated her career to protecting and restoring the vision of horses while elevating the standards of care in her field.

Through her expertise, mentorship, and devotion to her patients, she continues to shape the next generation of equine ophthalmology.

From North Carolina Roots to a Visionary Veterinary Career

A native of North Carolina, Stephanie Bell’s path to veterinary medicine began with a lifelong love of animals and an early fascination with the science of healing.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001 – an experience that ignited her curiosity about complex biological systems and prepared her for the rigor of veterinary school.

She went on to graduate with Phi Zeta honors from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, a distinction that recognized her academic excellence and professional promise. After earning her DVM, Stephanie Bell spent three years in private primary care practice in North Carolina, developing a strong foundation in clinical medicine and client communication.

Her growing interest in ophthalmology led her to pursue advanced training through a rotating internship at the University of Tennessee (2009–2010), followed by a Comparative Ophthalmology Residency at the University of California, Davis (2010–2013) – one of the world’s most prestigious programs.

She also strongly supports high-level equine ophthalmology training for veterinarians seeking to deepen their confidence in diagnosing and treating complex eye disease.

There, her research on novel therapeutics for Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU) contributed to ongoing progress in managing this sight-threatening disease, which remains one of the leading causes of blindness in horses.

A Leader in Equine Ophthalmology

After completing her residency, Stephanie Bell practiced as a veterinary ophthalmologist in both Texas and North Carolina before joining Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in 2019 – a move she describes as her “dream job.”

At Hagyard, she works alongside some of the foremost specialists in equine health, bringing advanced diagnostic and surgical expertise to one of the most renowned equine hospitals in the world.

Stephanie Bell’s clinical interests span a range of intricate ocular conditions, including immune-mediated eye diseases, corneal disorders, microsurgery (corneal and cataract procedures), blepharoplasty, adnexal surgery, and the ocular impacts of systemic illnesses.

Her meticulous approach and deep empathy for her patients define her care philosophy: to preserve sight whenever possible, and to ensure comfort and quality of life in every case. Her current research projects reflect her ongoing curiosity and commitment to progress in her specialty.

She is actively studying Eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), the prevalence and description of ocular abnormalities in foals across breeds, and treatment outcomes for keratomalacia. Each study adds to the growing body of knowledge that supports veterinarians worldwide in diagnosing and managing complex ocular conditions in horses.

Educator, Mentor, and Advocate for the Profession

Beyond her clinical and research work, Stephanie Bell is a dedicated educator and mentor.

She regularly shares her knowledge through continuing education events and professional conferences, including the Midwest Veterinary Conference, where she has presented on topics such as corneal ulcers, ocular emergencies, Equine Recurrent Uveitis, and emerging innovations in equine ophthalmology.

Her teaching extends to hands-on learning as well. At Hagyard, she leads ophthalmology wet labs for visiting veterinary students, most recently from The Ohio State University, offering practical training in nerve blocking techniques and subpalpebral lavage system (SPL) placement on both live horses and cadavers.

Her approachable teaching style and technical precision inspire students and colleagues alike, reinforcing her reputation as both a skilled clinician and a passionate mentor.

A Life Filled with Music, Animals, and Meaning

Outside of her professional achievements, Stephanie Bell’s life reflects a deep appreciation for music, connection, and the simple joys of living alongside animals. An avid music lover inspired by Waylon Jennings, she spends her free time songwriting, performing with her band, and occasionally singing duets with her father.

Her home life is equally full – shared with her beloved dogs (June Carter, Beaucephus Williams, Stoney Keith Earle, Jolene May, Mikey Townes Houser, and Janis Caroline Joplin), her “boss cat” Levon Helm, and her spirited off-the-track Thoroughbred, Lukas Colter Prine.

Stephanie Bell: Vision, Compassion, and Lasting Impact

At every stage of her career, Stephanie Bell, has exemplified what it means to blend technical mastery with genuine compassion. Whether she’s performing delicate ocular surgery, leading a student wet lab, or comforting a client through a challenging diagnosis, her mission remains clear: to protect the vision, comfort, and wellbeing of every horse she treats.

Through her dedication to clinical excellence, education, and innovation, Stephanie Bell continues to advance the field of equine ophthalmology – proving that true vision extends far beyond what the eye can see.
