Ben Buchanan

DVM, Dipl.ACVIM, Dipl.ACVECC

In the world of equine health, few names command the respect and admiration that Ben Buchanan does. As a veterinarian who holds dual board certifications in Large Animal Internal Medicine and Emergency & Critical Care, Ben Buchanan is among an elite group of professionals globally.

His exceptional expertise, clinical leadership, and deep-rooted passion for horses have earned him a place at the pinnacle of veterinary medicine. Born and raised in Navasota, Texas, Ben Buchanan was immersed in veterinary culture from a young age. His father, Dr. Terrell “T-Bone” Buchanan, laid the foundation of what would become a family legacy in equine care.

This early exposure instilled not just a love of horses, but a profound understanding of the unique challenges and rewards of equine veterinary practice. Today, that legacy continues at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital (BVEH), where Buchanan serves as Managing Partner.

From Texas A&M to Global Impact

After earning his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 2001, Ben Buchanan pursued rigorous postgraduate training. He completed a rotating internship and dual residencies at the University of Tennessee and the University of Pennsylvania, two of the most prestigious institutions in veterinary medicine.

By 2006, he had achieved the rare distinction of becoming a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC). His specialties include some of the most complex and critical aspects of equine medicine, including colic, respiratory and cardiac disease, ocular conditions, and neonatology. For practitioners seeking to deepen their skills in managing one of the most urgent conditions in the field, the equine colic management course for vets provides advanced, practical training grounded in real-world clinical scenarios.

Whether treating a sick foal or addressing life-threatening emergencies, Ben Buchanan brings a calm expertise that inspires confidence in clients and colleagues alike.

A Leader in Veterinary Innovation

Since joining BVEH in 2005, Ben Buchanan has been instrumental in transforming the practice into a multi-location, multi-discipline center of excellence. Under his leadership, the hospital has expanded its services, grown its veterinary team, and pioneered a more holistic approach to equine care, one that prioritizes not only the health of the animal but also the wellbeing of clients and staff.

His commitment to excellence was recognized in 2012 when he was honored as the Texas Equine Practitioner of the Year by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. But for Ben Buchanan, accolades are simply a reflection of a deeper mission: to improve the lives of horses and the people who care for them.

Educator, Mentor, and Advocate

Beyond the hospital walls, Ben Buchanan is a passionate educator and advocate. He has trained two veterinary residents, mentored dozens of interns, and impacted hundreds of veterinary students.

Ben Buchanan’s influence stretches far beyond Texas, he is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences, where he shares cutting-edge insights on topics like disaster medicine, seasonal endocrine effects, and Rhodococcus equi.

His leadership roles further extend to serving as Chair of the Equine Practice Committee for the TVMA and as Vice President of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association. He also contributes his expertise as an editorial board member for the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

The Man Beyond the Medicine

Ben Buchanan’s personal life is as rich and grounded as his professional one. He is married to Dr. Shana Buchanan, a fellow Texas A&M Vet School graduate, and together they are raising two children, Jane Marie and Terrell Jackson. Their family life includes two Jack Russell Terrier, Fascia and Bisquik, and a shared love of the outdoors, cooking, and wildlife photography.

His favorite quote, “Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to drop back”, perfectly captures his approach to both life and medicine. He is a perpetual learner, a compassionate caregiver, and a visionary leader who continues to advance equine veterinary care for the betterment of the profession and the animals it serves.

In every sense, Ben Buchanan represents the gold standard in equine veterinary medicine. His rare dual board certifications, commitment to mentorship, and innovative leadership make him one of the most respected figures in the field today. Whether he’s saving lives in the clinic, shaping future veterinarians, or speaking on the global stage, Ben Buchanan’s impact is unmistakable, and it’s only just beginning.
