Dr. Alex Young
BVSc(Hons I) DAVCR, DACVR-EDI Diplomate American College of Veterinary Radiology – Equine Diagnostic Imaging Diplomate American College of Veterinary Radiology

In the world of veterinary diagnostic imaging, few names command the respect and recognition that Dr. Alex Young does. A double-boarded specialist in veterinary radiology, Dr. Alex Young is renowned not only for her exceptional clinical expertise, but also for her dedication to advancing equine imaging through education, mentorship, and global collaboration.
Her journey from a hands-on equine practitioner in rural Australia to a leading voice in veterinary radiology is a story of vision, grit, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
A Foundation Built on Passion and Purpose
Dr. Alex Young’s path into veterinary medicine was forged early in life. Growing up in a family involved in thoroughbred breeding, she developed a deep-rooted connection to horses. “If I wasn’t a horse vet, I wouldn’t be a vet at all,” she has said, a sentiment that perfectly captures the depth of her commitment to equine health.
After graduating from the University of Sydney in 2004 with First Class Honours, she completed a one-year equine internship at Agnes Banks Equine Clinic and then worked as an ambulatory vet, gaining vital experience in field-based diagnostics.
But it was a fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasound at the University of California, Davis that would set Dr. Alex Young on a new trajectory. Originally seeking to refine her skills in lameness diagnostics, she found herself immersed in an environment rich with imaging innovation.
Mentored by internationally recognized experts such as Dr. Sarah Puchalski, Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb, and Dr. Mathieu Spriet, she was inspired to delve deeper into the world of diagnostic imaging.
Dual Diplomate and Imaging Trailblazer
What followed was six years of intensive specialty training at UC Davis, two years focused on equine ultrasonography and four more dedicated to radiology.
Dr. Alex Young became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (DACVR) in 2013 and later earned the rare distinction of Diplomate of the ACVR in Equine Diagnostic Imaging (DACVR-EDI), a recognition held by only a select few globally.
Her dual-boarded status positions her uniquely within the veterinary field. While her qualifications span all species, her passion remains firmly rooted in equine imaging particularly the musculoskeletal system.
Dr. Alex Young’s skill set enables her to approach each case with both clinical intuition and technological mastery, translating complex images into meaningful, actionable diagnoses.
Leadership in Veterinary Education and Consultancy
Returning to Australia, Dr. Alex Young served as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging at both the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland. Her academic roles have been instrumental in closing the education gap in equine ultrasound and imaging.
Recognizing that many veterinarians graduate with minimal hands-on imaging experience, Dr. Alex Young has become a dedicated educator and workshop presenter, leading ultrasound training sessions at major veterinary conferences across Australia and North America. For those looking to expand their knowledge remotely, she also supports equine vet continuing education online, providing accessible, practical learning designed specifically for equine veterinarians seeking to enhance their imaging skills and clinical confidence.
In her current role as Director of Alex Young Specialist Veterinary Imaging, she offers teleradiology and imaging consultancy services to equine veterinarians both nationally and internationally. Her firm provides high-level interpretation of complex imaging studies supporting vets in both routine and challenging cases, and ensuring that horses everywhere benefit from accurate and timely diagnoses.
A Champion for Equine Imaging Advancement
Dr. Alex Young’s contributions go beyond technical excellence. She is an advocate for elevating veterinary imaging standards and democratizing access to advanced diagnostics. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes repetition, hands-on practice, and confidence-building, qualities that resonate strongly with her colleagues.
“Ultrasound is all about practice and hand-eye coordination,” she says. “The more you scan, the more skilled an ultrasonographer you become. The more you see, the more you realize the mistakes you’ve made, and that’s how you grow.”
Life Beyond the Dark Room
Despite a career that often requires long hours spent reviewing images in a dark room, Dr. Alex Young finds balance in family life. Once a self-confessed workaholic, she now embraces her role as a mother, enjoying precious moments outdoors with her children, a return, in a way, to the sunshine and fresh air that first drew her to equine practice.
Why Dr. Alex Young Matters
Dr. Alex Young is more than a veterinary radiologist, she is a pioneer, educator, and role model. Her work bridges the gap between frontline equine care and specialist diagnostics, empowering veterinarians with the tools and knowledge they need to improve outcomes for their patients.
For practitioners looking to deepen their skills, educators striving to build stronger programs, or horse owners seeking the best in diagnostic care, Dr. Alex Young represents the gold standard in veterinary imaging. Her journey reminds us that innovation, mentorship, and compassion can transform a profession, and the lives of the animals it serves.
