IAEP – Indian Association of Equine Practitioners: Mission, History & Role

IAEP stands for the Indian Association of Equine Practitioners, the national professional organisation representing equine veterinarians across India. It works to improve equine health, welfare, education, and clinical standards through training, research, outreach, and international collaboration.

What Is the Indian Association of Equine Practitioners (IAEP)?

The Indian Association of Equine Practitioners (IAEP) is a registered professional association dedicated to veterinarians working with horses in India.

It supports equine practitioners through continuing education, scientific exchange, welfare initiatives, and collaboration with national and international veterinary bodies.

Aims & Objectives of IAEP

IAEP’s stated aims include:

  • Enhancing the health and welfare of equine species across India
  • Raising professional standards among equine veterinary practitioners
  • Creating research, seminar, symposium, and continuing education opportunities in equine medicine
  • Running outreach programs and campaigns in regions with equine populations to educate farmers and deliver veterinary support
  • Collaborating with universities, government agencies, and private organisations to advance equine science
  • Maintaining a technical library of books, periodicals, and journals relevant to equine veterinary practice
  • Advising institutions and government bodies on matters of equine veterinary science

IAEP Structure & Leadership

The Indian Association of Equine Practitioners is governed by an executive body. The organisation also maintains an Executive Committee and co-opted members. A members list is publicly available, showing many prominent equine practitioners across India such as current president Dr. S.K. Kulkarni and treasurer Dr. Yogesh Bhosale

IAEP Activities, Events & Training

IAEP organises a wide range of scientific and educational activities for its members:

  • Wet labs and workshops: Past training has included practical seminars on abdominal and limb ultrasonography in horses, held in Pune.
  • Collaborations with WEVA: All the way back in 2016, IAEP co-hosted an international workshop with the World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA), covering colic, head surgery, fracture repair, and radiology in Shirwal, Maharashtra.
  • Outreach & farmer engagement: IAEP participates in horse fairs and rural programs, helping improve equine welfare for working equids while educating owners.
  • Member-focused seminars: Ongoing CPD opportunities cover imaging, diagnostics, reproduction, welfare, and more, often tailored to life members and students.

IAEP’s training programmes reflect the realities of equine practice in India, where veterinarians work across racing yards, breeding farms, ceremonial horses, mounted police units, and large populations of working equids.

This practical focus ensures education is directly applicable to field conditions as well as referral-level practice.

IAEP International Collaboration & Global Links

IAEP actively collaborates with global equine veterinary bodies:

  • It works with WEVA on co-hosted workshops and training programs, bringing international expertise directly to Indian practitioners.
  • IAEP is open to affiliations with organisations outside India, as part of its objective to “seek affiliation with similar organizations functioning outside the country.”
  • Such international links help Indian vets stay current with global standards, foster knowledge exchange, and build networks across continents.

Why IAEP Matters to Equine Veterinarians in India

India has a unique equine industry, ranging from traditional working equids to thoroughbred racing, polo, and mounted police horses. The Indian Association of Equine Practitioners provides veterinarians with:

  • Access to specialist training and CPD
  • A professional community to share knowledge and challenges
  • Representation in national veterinary policy and welfare discussions
  • Connections to global equine veterinary networks

For international colleagues, IAEP serves as a gateway into Indian equine practice, opening opportunities for cross-border collaboration and research.

Join Our Community

We already have a growing number of Indian equine veterinarians in our global network, alongside colleagues from Europe, Latin America, and Africa.

If you’d like to connect with like-minded professionals, share best practices, and access international training opportunities, now is the perfect time to join.

If you are attending WEVA or the Veterinary Practitioners’ Association of Thailand eventin Bangkok in January 2026, make sure to come and say hello.

Together with IAEP, you’ll be part of a worldwide community committed to advancing equine medicine. Maybe one day we can organise a equine veterinarian cricket tournament between IAEP, EVA, NZEVA, BEVA and SAEVA. I know who I’ll be betting my money on. 🙂
