Dr. Vicky Savage

BVSc MSc CertAVP DipECEIM MRCVS

When it comes to the world of equine internal medicine, few names inspire as much respect and admiration as Dr. Vicky Savage. A European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine, Dr. Savage has carved out a remarkable career grounded in clinical excellence, academic rigor, and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of horses.

Her journey from a veterinary student in Liverpool to a leading expert in critical care and neonatology is nothing short of extraordinary.

A Global Foundation in Equine Medicine

Dr. Vicky Savage’s veterinary path began at the University of Liverpool, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2013. Following a year in mixed practice in Yorkshire, she took her first major step into the specialist field with an internship at Scone Equine Hospital in Australia, one of the southern hemisphere’s leading centers for equine critical care. Veterinarians can further develop their skills through a equine CPD membership for veterinarians, accessing expert-led training and practical learning from specialists like Dr. Savage.

It was here that her passion for neonatal and reproductive medicine took hold. Fueled by curiosity and a desire to deepen her clinical knowledge, Dr. Vicky Savage spent two years working as a stud veterinarian across hemispheres, mastering the intricacies of breeding seasons in both the north and south. Her dedication to stud medicine laid a strong clinical foundation for what would come next.

Specialist Training and Academic Excellence

In 2017, Dr. Vicky Savage began a residency in Equine Internal Medicine at the University of Bristol, an intensive three-year program that would see her gain both board certification and a deeper academic appreciation for complex internal medicine cases.

Dr. Vicky Savage successfully became a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (DipECEIM) in 2021, officially earning her title as a European Specialist.

While at Bristol, Dr. Vicky Savage also conducted research into two of the most challenging equine conditions: acute kidney disease and trigeminal-mediated headshaking, both of which continue to test the boundaries of current veterinary understanding.

She has also achieved a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP) and holds a Master’s degree in Veterinary Parasitology, a rare combination that underscores her wide-ranging expertise.

Leadership at Three Counties Equine Hospital

Since joining Three Counties Equine Hospital (TCEH) in 2020, Dr. Vicky Savage has become an integral part of one of the UK’s most respected equine veterinary teams. Known for her calm under pressure and precise diagnostic acumen, she is often called upon for the most complex internal medicine cases.

Her work with critically ill foals and horses in intensive care settings continues to make a tangible difference to equine health outcomes across the region.

Endurance Athlete, Adventurer, and Advocate

Outside of her veterinary career, Dr. Vicky Savage is equally impressive. An avid runner, she recently completed the legendary Bob Graham Round, scaling 42 peaks in the Lake District over 66 miles and 8,200 meters of ascent, in under 24 hours.

Fueled by sheer grit (and a few cheese and pickle sandwiches), this monumental effort is a testament to her endurance, both on the mountains and in the demanding world of equine medicine.

Her off-duty pursuits also include kitesurfing, snowboarding, and trail running, usually accompanied by her energetic collie and her perpetually unimpressed Westie.

Dr. Vicky Savage is more than a highly qualified veterinarian, she is a thought leader, a role model, and a powerhouse of determination and empathy. Whether she’s stabilizing a newborn foal, publishing new research, or conquering a grueling ultramarathon, Dr. Vicky Savage brings the same level of commitment and excellence to everything she does.
