Mike Pownall

DVM, MBA

In the evolving world of veterinary medicine, few professionals embody the fusion of clinical excellence and business innovation as powerfully as Mike Pownall. A veterinarian, farrier, entrepreneur, speaker, and international business strategist, Pownall has carved a unique path that’s reshaping how veterinary professionals approach both animal care and practice management.

From the Forge to the Clinic: A Ground-Up Approach

Mike Pownall’s journey into veterinary medicine didn’t begin in a lecture hall, it began in the field, hoof in hand, working as a farrier for seven years. His early hands-on experience with horses, particularly his interest in lameness and hoof disorders, laid the groundwork for a deeper understanding of equine care.

That curiosity and drive led him to the Ontario Veterinary College, where he graduated in 2001 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Building a Practice—and a Philosophy

In 2002, alongside his wife and veterinary school classmate Dr. Melissa McKee, Pownall co-founded McKee-Pownall Equine Services. What started as a modest operation grew into a network of four equine hospitals across Ontario and Florida, supported by over 17 veterinarians and 40 support staff. But their vision wasn’t just about scale, it was about sustainability.

McKee-Pownall Equine Services was born out of a desire to do things differently. The Pownalls challenged the outdated 24/7 vet lifestyle, pushed for better pay and recognition for support staff, and put client communication at the heart of care. Today, their clinics are models of modern veterinary practice, focused, innovative, and deeply client-centered.

Business Expertise That Elevates the Profession

What sets Pownall apart in the veterinary world is his dual expertise in both medicine and business. After years in clinical practice, he returned to school and earned his MBA from the prestigious Ivey Business School at Western University, where he was named class valedictorian. His business acumen quickly translated into actionable strategies for veterinary practices worldwide.

As a partner in Oculus Insights, Pownall now educates and consults with veterinary professionals across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. His work focuses on practice management, pricing strategy, marketing, leadership development, and human resources, areas often overlooked in traditional veterinary training but essential for long-term success.

A Global Voice for Veterinary Business

Mike Pownall is not only a clinician and consultant, he’s also a dynamic and engaging international speaker. He regularly presents at global veterinary conferences, sharing insights on how veterinary teams can run more efficient, profitable, and sustainable practices.

Whether addressing pricing strategies at the Indiana Association of Equine Practitioners or discussing technology trends at the AAEP, Pownall brings clarity, energy, and practical wisdom to every stage.

Through his blog, podcast, and webinars at Veterinary Business Matters, he reaches thousands of veterinary professionals with thought-provoking content on the business of animal care.

Leadership in Action

Beyond McKee-Pownall and Oculus, Pownall serves as the VP of Mergers & Acquisitions North America for the Altano Group, where he supports the strategic growth and development of veterinary practices. He also played a key role as Veterinary Services Manager for the 2015 Pan American Games, further demonstrating his leadership in high-stakes, international veterinary settings.

A Thought Leader Rooted in Real Experience

What makes Mike Pownall so compelling isn’t just his resume, it’s his perspective. His journey from farrier to veterinarian to business leader gives him a rare credibility. He understands the day-to-day challenges veterinary professionals face because he’s lived them. And he’s built a career out of helping others overcome those challenges with integrity, insight, and a commitment to excellence.

When he’s not working, Pownall finds joy in nature, hiking, travel, and the arts, interests that reflect the same curiosity and appreciation for life that fuel his professional passions.

He’s not just helping veterinarians survive, he’s helping them thrive. Through education, empowerment, and empathy, Pownall is redefining what it means to lead in veterinary medicine.
