Marianna Biggi – A Leading Specialist in Equine Diagnostic Imaging
DVM, PhD, FHEA, DipECVDI, MRCVS

In the global field of equine diagnostic imaging where precision, anatomical insight, and advanced technology converge, Marianna Biggi has emerged as one of the most respected authorities of her generation.
Her career reflects an unwavering commitment to understanding lameness, unravelling complex orthopaedic problems, and improving the quality of imaging available to horses in clinical practice.
A board-certified specialist, experienced lecturer, and trusted teleradiologist, Marianna Biggi has built a professional journey defined by scientific depth, clinical skill, and a passion for elevating equine radiology standards across the world.
Early Academic Foundations and the Beginning of a Specialist Path
Marianna Biggi graduated with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Parma in 2004. Shortly after entering private equine practice in Italy, she discovered a growing fascination with the deeper mechanics of musculoskeletal disease particularly conditions affecting the equine foot.
Her interest led her to pursue a PhD at the University of Milan, where she undertook an intensive research program focused on fragments of the distal border of the navicular bone, a topic at the centre of many complex lameness cases.
Her work utilised both radiology and high-field MRI, giving her early and meaningful exposure to advanced imaging technology. She completed her doctoral studies in 2010, establishing a scientific foundation that would shape the remainder of her career.
Specialist Training at the Animal Health Trust
Immediately after her PhD, Marianna Biggi began a residency in large animal diagnostic imaging at the Animal Health Trust (AHT), one of Europe’s most respected centres for equine diagnostics and orthopaedic investigation.
Under the guidance of world-renowned clinician Dr. Sue Dyson, she refined her approach to imaging interpretation, clinical reasoning, and the management of performance-limiting conditions.
This four-and-a-half-year residency gave her hands-on experience with radiography, ultrasonography, MRI, CT, and scintigraphy, and exposed her to an extraordinary breadth of complex clinical cases. In 2015, she achieved Diplomate status with the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (DipECVDI), recognising her as a European and RCVS Specialist in her field.
Academic Contribution at the Royal Veterinary College
Following her specialist accreditation, Marianna Biggi joined the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) as a Lecturer in Large Animal Radiology. In this role, she taught veterinary students, supported clinical cases, and collaborated with colleagues across the Equine Referral Hospital.
Her academic work combined rigorous teaching with practical diagnostic support, helping shape future veterinarians while contributing to enhanced imaging standards at one of the world’s leading veterinary institutions.

Leadership at VetCT and the Rise of a Teleradiology Expert
In 2017, Marianna Biggi took on a new challenge when she joined VetCT, a global teleradiology and teleconsulting company known for its innovative, clinician-support-focused approach. She became Head of the Equine Group, guiding a team of equine imaging specialists and ensuring high-quality interpretation for clinicians around the world.
Her role at VetCT allowed her to expand her impact beyond a single hospital. By supporting veterinarians internationally with timely, expert imaging reports, she has contributed to better diagnosis, improved case outcomes, and more confident decision-making across equine practice.
Today, she continues to work as a teleradiologist for VetCT, while also maintaining a clinical imaging position in a UK referral hospital, blending remote consultation with hands-on diagnostic work.
A Passion for Equine Orthopaedics and MRI
Throughout her career, Marianna Biggi has maintained a strong interest in equine orthopaedics, with a particular enthusiasm for equine MRI, a modality central to detecting subtle injuries in the foot, pastern, and distal limb.
Her early PhD training, combined with years of specialist imaging experience, has positioned her as a go-to expert in MRI interpretation, especially for navicular disease and complex lameness cases.
Her understanding of orthopaedic pathology, paired with her meticulous imaging approach, makes her a trusted advisor to clinicians seeking clarity in difficult diagnostic situations.
Marianna Biggi: A Specialist Devoted to Clinical Excellence
Marianna Biggi’s work spans research, teaching, clinical service, and global radiology support. Her contributions have strengthened imaging interpretation, improved diagnostic accuracy, and helped veterinarians better understand the conditions affecting equine athletes.
With deep expertise, years of specialist training, and a career dedicated to advancing equine orthopaedics, Marianna Biggi continues to play a vital role in shaping how imaging is used in modern equine practice.
Marianna Biggi is a faculty speaker in the Equine Lameness Program. If you wish to elevate your lameness diagnostic skills and learn directly from her, Myra Barrett and Dr. Ken Jacobs make sure to explore the Equine Lameness Program. This the most comprehensive, case-based training pathway designed to help veterinarians make a measurable difference to the horses in their care.
