Academic and Professional Foundations

Dr. Jesus Buil graduated in 2009 from the University of Zaragoza in Spain, where he completed his veterinary degree. His commitment to advancing equine health was evident early on, as he pursued an internship at the university’s equine hospital and went on to earn a Master’s in Equine Medicine and Surgery in 2011.

These formative years provided him with both clinical expertise and a deep understanding of equine welfare in diverse environments.

Commitment to Working Equids

Following his postgraduate training, Dr. Jesus Buil worked extensively with AEPGA (Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys) in rural Portugal. There, he gained firsthand experience treating donkeys in agricultural and underserved communities, often managing complex cases with limited resources.

He also collaborated with one of The Donkey Sanctuary’s Portuguese holding bases, where his clinical focus centered on orthopedic conditions affecting the feet, a critical area of concern in working donkeys.

Advancing Donkey Welfare at The Donkey Sanctuary

In 2016, Dr. Jesus Buil joined The Donkey Sanctuary in Devon, UK, where his career has flourished. Today, he serves as the Lead Veterinary Surgeon for Equine Dentistry, a role that highlights both his technical expertise and his commitment to advancing donkey healthcare worldwide.

His work combines clinical practice with research, teaching, and advocacy, ensuring that donkeys benefit from cutting-edge veterinary knowledge and compassionate care.

Dr. Jesus Buil’s professional interests are particularly focused on:

• Equine Dentistry – promoting best practices in oral health to improve welfare and longevity.
• Equine Podiatry – advancing understanding and treatment of foot and orthopedic conditions in donkeys.

In recognition of his advanced training and contributions to the field, he recently obtained the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP), further cementing his standing as a leader in equine veterinary medicine.
