Few veterinarians combine practical horsemanship, advanced academic achievement, and international veterinary expertise as seamlessly as James Meyer. From his beginnings in South Australia to his current role as an accomplished equine clinician, educator, and researcher, Meyer has built a career that places him at the forefront of equine dentistry and sports medicine.

Early Foundations in Horses and Veterinary Science

James Meyer’s journey with horses began at just three years old. Immersed in riding disciplines ranging from hacking and dressage to eventing, he quickly developed both technical skill and a deep appreciation for equine welfare. His formative years with the Goolwa District Pony Club not only shaped his horsemanship but also ignited his passion for veterinary medicine and coaching.

He went on to graduate in the inaugural Doctor of Veterinary Medicine class at the University of Adelaide, cementing his commitment to equine health. Alongside veterinary studies, Meyer pursued a Bachelor of Science (Pre-Veterinary) and became an active contributor to student veterinary groups focused on equine care.

Professional Expertise and Clinical Practice

With over a decade of clinical experience across South Australia and Western Australia, James Meyer has worked in some of the region’s most respected equine practices.

After serving with Adelaide Plains Equine Clinic, Baldivis Vet Hospital, and Oldbury Equine Clinic, he launched his own successful practice, Fleurieu Equine Clinic, where he served clients for five years before returning to Oldbury Equine Clinic as an Associate Veterinarian.

Today, his practice covers a wide scope of equine health, but his true professional passion lies in equine dentistry, where he has pursued extensive postgraduate education and earned Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Equine Dentistry).

Academic and Research Leadership

James Meyer is currently undertaking a joint PhD through Ghent University in Belgium and the University of Adelaide, focusing on the physiology of thermoregulation and cooldown strategies in eventing horses. His research reflects a commitment not only to individual horse health but also to advancing the broader field of equine sports medicine and performance safety.

Roles in Veterinary Sport and Governance

A respected figure in equestrian sport, James Meyer is a FEI Level 3 Official Veterinarian in dressage, show jumping, and eventing, as well as a Level 2 veterinarian in endurance. He also serves as an AERA-accredited veterinarian for endurance riding competitions.

Beyond clinical and event duties, he contributes to equestrian development as a Pony Club Australia NCAS Level 1 Coach, sharing his expertise with the next generation of riders. His leadership within veterinary associations includes serving as President of the EVA Young Members Group, helping shape opportunities for early-career veterinarians.
