Three Essentials Every Equine Veterinarian Should Know

When asked about the three things she wishes all equine veterinarians knew about dentistry, Dr. Pollaris highlighted these critical points:

Master the Art of a Proper Dental Examination
Dr. Pollaris emphasized the importance of being comfortable and skilled in performing thorough dental exams. “In Belgium, there’s still a gap in this area,” she explained.

“It’s improving as more veterinarians show interest, but being able to conduct a proper examination is a crucial step in advancing equine dentistry.”

Understand the Anatomy
To identify pathology, veterinarians need a solid understanding of equine dental anatomy. “It doesn’t have to be overly complicated,” Dr. Pollaris assured.

“Just recognize key structures like dental stars and the infundibula in maxillary cheek teeth. With this knowledge, you can spot abnormalities more effectively.”

Invest in the Right Equipment
According to Dr. Pollaris, dentistry can be a rewarding and enjoyable field, but only with the proper tools.

“The right equipment makes all the difference,” she said. “It not only improves outcomes but also makes the work itself far more fulfilling.”

Turning Disaster Into Success

Dr. Pollaris recounted a particularly unforgettable moment from her residency. While performing a standing colic surgery on a cow, everything seemed to go wrong.

“The cow decided to lie down just as we were finishing, forcing us to continue on the floor,” she recalled. Amidst the chaos, another complication arose when a finger accidentally punctured the cecum.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Pollaris and her team persevered. “We sutured the new hole, put everything back in place, and somehow, the cow survived,” she said. “It was a disaster turned success and a reminder to keep going, even when the odds seem stacked against you.”

Balancing Adventure and Dedication

Outside of her work, Dr. Pollaris’s adventurous spirit mirrors her professional drive. When asked about her holiday preference, she enthusiastically chose adventure holidays.

“For sure, adventure,” she said. Her choice reflects her proactive, hands-on approach to both life and veterinary care.

As for her beverage of choice, coffee narrowly edges out tea. “If I had to pick one, it would be coffee,” she admitted.

For Dr. Pollaris, the appeal of equine dentistry lies in its combination of intellectual challenge and tangible impact. “Dentistry is such a fun profession when you have the right tools,” she said.
