Academic Background and Veterinary Training
Professor Casper Lindegaard graduated in veterinary medicine in 2002 from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, now part of the University of Copenhagen.
After graduation, he gained hands-on experience in mixed rural practice, developing a practical foundation in large animal medicine. This early experience guided his focus toward surgical specialisation and research in equine orthopaedics and pain management.
From 2005 to 2008, Casper Lindegaard was a PhD fellow at the University of Copenhagen, focusing on large animal pain management.
In 2009, he earned his doctoral degree for his dissertation, “Intra-articular morphine in horses , Clinical properties in lipopolysaccharide-induced synovitis,” a pivotal study that advanced understanding of joint pain, inflammation, and analgesic strategies in horses.
Specialist Surgical Training and Certification
From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Casper Lindegaard completed the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) residency programme in large animal surgery at the University of Copenhagen.
This residency included international externships at leading equine hospitals in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Sweden. In February 2012, he earned Diplomate status with the ECVS, formally recognising his advanced surgical expertise.

Clinical Leadership and Practice
After board certification, Dr. Casper Lindegaard joined the Regional Animal Hospital in Helsingborg, Sweden, later part of Evidensia Specialist Equine Hospital, where he served as Head of Equine Surgery from 2012 to 2018.
He led complex surgical procedures in orthopaedics and upper respiratory surgery, introduced minimally invasive techniques, and prioritised pain management and postoperative care.
He also held senior leadership positions within the Evidensia Veterinary Care Group, serving as Head of Veterinary Medicine for Evidensia Equine Sweden in 2016 and Group Medical Director for Evidensia Nordic from 2017 to 2018. These roles allowed him to oversee clinical quality, veterinary standards, and strategic direction across multiple hospitals.
Academic Career and Current Roles
In 2018, Dr. Casper Lindegaard returned to Denmark to focus on education, research, and consultancy. He was appointed Associate Professor of Large Animal Surgery at the University of Copenhagen and later promoted to Professor of Equine Orthopaedic Surgery with a focus on Advanced Diagnostic Imaging.
In October 2023, he became Director of the Large Animal Teaching Hospital, leading one of Scandinavia’s most prominent centres for equine clinical care, teaching, and research.
