Anne Dwyer is a distinguished equine veterinarian whose career has shaped the field of equine ophthalmology and inspired generations of veterinary professionals. With nearly four decades of hands-on practice, research, and leadership, she has built a legacy defined by innovation, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to the health and welfare of horses.

Early Passion for Horses and Education

Growing up in Manlius, New York, Anne Dwyer developed a deep love for horses early in life. She was a founding member of the Limestone Pony Club, where she honed her riding skills and gained firsthand experience caring for horses. This early involvement sparked a lifelong dedication to equine health and veterinary science.

She attended Mount Holyoke College, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1975.

After college, Anne Dwyer worked at Upstate Medical Center conducting tumor immunology research, broadening her scientific foundation. During this period, she also worked as a groom and exercise rider at racetracks along the East Coast and in Florida.

These experiences provided unique insight into the athletic demands and medical challenges faced by performance horses and cemented her desire to pursue veterinary medicine.

Anne Dwyer earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983, where she was actively involved in student organizations and graduated with honors.

Building a Practice and Expanding Veterinary Care

Immediately following graduation, Anne Dwyer joined Genesee Valley Equine Clinic (GVEC) in Rochester, New York. She quickly became known for her exceptional skill and dedication to her clients and patients. In 1995, she purchased the practice, ushering in a period of growth and transformation.

Under her guidance, GVEC expanded from a small two-veterinarian practice to a thriving five-doctor clinic. She oversaw the construction of a state-of-the-art haul-in facility and launched a structured internship program in 2000, which has since trained over 22 new veterinarians.

Anne Dwyer’s emphasis on mentorship helped shape the careers of many young practitioners while elevating the standard of equine care in the region.

After selling her shares in 2017, she transitioned toward retirement, continuing to serve the practice part-time until her full retirement from active clinical work in 2022.

Advancing the Field of Equine Ophthalmology

While Anne Dwyer provided comprehensive equine care throughout her career, she is best known for her pioneering work in equine ophthalmology, the study and treatment of eye diseases in horses – expertise that aligns closely with modern approaches to equine eye disease management.

From early on, she dedicated herself to understanding complex equine ocular conditions. She collaborated with researchers at Cornell, UC Davis, NC State University, the University of Florida, and the University of Rochester to explore diseases such as equine recurrent uveitis and ocular squamous cell carcinoma.

Her investigations into the genetic and immunological factors influencing these conditions have contributed significantly to the field.

Her findings have been published in leading veterinary journals, and she has authored numerous book chapters and educational materials for both professionals and horse owners. In recognition of her groundbreaking work, Anne Dwyer was named an Honorary Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) in 2011.

She remains a highly sought-after speaker, delivering lectures at conferences around the globe to share her expertise and improve outcomes for equine patients worldwide.

Leadership and Professional Service

Anne Dwyer’s influence extends beyond clinical care and research. She has been deeply involved in advancing veterinary medicine through leadership roles in national organizations.

She served as President of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) in 2013, helping guide the association’s efforts to promote equine health and veterinary excellence. From 2019 to 2025, she represented equine practitioners on the AVMA Council on Education, playing a vital role in veterinary accreditation and educational standards.

Anne Dwyer also serves as Vice Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council at Cornell’s veterinary college, sits on the Cornell Zweig Committee that allocates funding for equine research, and is an active member of the Advisory Board at the Flaum Eye Institute at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. Her diverse leadership roles reflect her dedication to both science and education.

Continuing Impact and Personal Pursuits

Although she has retired from daily practice, Anne Dwyer remains a prominent voice in veterinary medicine. She continues to collaborate on research projects, lecture internationally, and mentor veterinarians interested in equine ophthalmology and practice management.

Outside of her professional commitments, Anne Dwyer enjoys a variety of hobbies, including theater, kayaking, yoga, hiking, reading, and playing the cello. These pursuits reflect her belief in maintaining balance and creativity alongside a lifelong commitment to veterinary science.
