Clinical Approach to Uveitis with Caryn E. Plummer, DVM, DACVO

Confidently identify, differentiate, and manage uveitis in horses – from acute flare-ups to complex recurrent cases – while minimising vision loss and safeguarding long-term comfort.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  • Understanding Uveitis: Inflammation of the uveal tract can be secondary (trauma, corneal/systemic disease) or primary immune-mediated (ERU); breakdown of the blood–ocular barrier is central to disease.
  • Clinical Signs & Diagnosis: Acute signs include blepharospasm, photophobia, aqueous flare, hypopyon, keratic precipitates, and miosis; chronic signs include synechiae, cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal changes.
  • ERU Types & Risk Factors: Recognize classic vs insidious forms, breed predispositions (e.g., Appaloosas), genetic associations, and potential infectious triggers such as leptospirosis.
  • Management Strategies: Combine topical/systemic anti-inflammatories, mydriatics, and immunomodulation; consider surgical options (cyclosporine implants, intravitreal gentamicin) while emphasizing client education and long-term monitoring.
