Building a Career in Equine Medicine

Graduating from the University of Liverpool in 2017, Dr. Ellie McGoldrick began her career as an ambulatory equine veterinarian, quickly gaining first-hand experience in field medicine and equine emergency and critical care CE, before pursuing an intensive internship at a busy referral hospital in the Midlands, where she refined her skills in anaesthesia, emergency care, and case management.

Her next step took her to Fyrnwy Equine Group, a large 18-vet referral practice, where she completed an internship before becoming an associate veterinary surgeon. There, she managed a wide caseload, including overnight hospital patients, critical care, and stud medicine, while developing a deep interest in anaesthesia and complex medical cases.

Joining The Donkey Sanctuary

Initially, she was responsible for the clinical care of more than 380 resident donkeys while also supporting welfare queries and overseeing the health of donkeys living in guardian homes across the UK.

Her role extended beyond hands-on care, as she also participated in educational initiatives designed to improve understanding of donkey health among both professionals and the public.
