Dr. João Rodrigues is a globally recognized equine veterinary expert, with a specialization in donkey health, welfare, and dentistry.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Portugal, Dr. Rodrigues began his career working with endangered donkey breeds, such as the Mirandês and Zamorano-Leonés, in Portugal and Spain. This early experience fostered his passion for veterinary dentistry and equid welfare.

In 2009, Dr. Rodrigues embarked on a PhD program, focusing his research on donkey dentistry in collaboration with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and Complutense University of Madrid.

His work established him as a leading voice in the niche but critical field of donkey oral health, resulting in the publication of numerous scientific papers and presentations at international conferences.

Dr. João Rodrigues is classified as an Expert in Veterinary Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery by the Complutense University of Madrid.

He has served as a partner and board member of the Portuguese Society of Veterinary Dentistry and continues to mentor veterinarians globally through workshops, lectures, and international training initiatives. His outreach includes projects aimed at improving the welfare of working equids in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Mexico.

Since 2016, Dr. JoãoRodrigues has been a Senior Lead in Welfare Assessment at The Donkey Sanctuary in the UK, where he combines his clinical expertise with a mission to enhance donkey welfare worldwide.

He has also held an academic role as a Professor of Medicine and Surgery of Equids in Portugal.

A passionate advocate for sustainable equid management, Dr. Rodrigues chairs the Portuguese Association of Animal Traction (APTRAN) and the FECTU – European Draught Horse Federation.

With his unparalleled experience in donkey welfare and dentistry, Dr. João Rodrigues continues to advance global standards in veterinary care for equids.
