WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

History & Risk Factors: Recognize breed predispositions, onset timing, performance changes, and systemic signs such as ill thrift, poor recovery, or weight loss.
Physical Exam Essentials: Always auscultate both sides of the heart in quiet conditions, palpate pulses for strength/synchrony, and assess for jugular distension or edema.
Murmur Interpretation: Differentiate systolic vs diastolic murmurs using timing with pulses, understand grading (1–6/6), and consider likely causes (mitral/tricuspid regurgitation, VSD, aortic regurgitation).
Consequences & Pathophysiology: Link the lesion’s location to potential backward flow effects, compensatory mechanisms, and performance implications; recognize when further diagnostics are warranted.
