Eye Emergencies in the Horse with Dennis Brooks, DVM PhD DACVO

When a horse presents with a swollen, cloudy, or painful eye, every minute matters.
In this practical, case-based masterclass, Dennis Brooks – one of the world’s foremost equine ophthalmologists – shows you exactly what to do in the first critical hours to preserve vision and prevent catastrophic loss.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Recognize the true emergencies – Distinguish between corneal ulcers, uveitis, glaucoma, and trauma — and know which require immediate referral.
  • Perform a structured field exam – Master the quick assessment techniques that reveal whether the eye is visual, ruptured, or salvageable.
  • Stabilize the case confidently – Apply proven medical protocols for the first 24 hours – including pain control, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial choices, and when to use sub-palpebral lavage systems.
  • Avoid common pitfalls – Understand which treatments worsen melting ulcers or increase intra-ocular pressure, and how to prevent them.
  • Communicate prognosis clearly – Gain Dr Brooks’s frameworks for owner conversations – when to reassure, when to refer, and how to explain outcomes.
